We believe the long term solution to breaking the cycle of poverty in the Kibera must come from within the Kibera itself, one child at a time. Therefore, we work with the community and in the community, to provide local and culturally appropriate solutions. By empowering the community to provide the most needy children with the resources needed to improve their education, health, and overall quality of life, these children will grow up to be caring and productive adults. With pride and a sense of accomplishment we will continue to promote their education and instill a desire to give back to the Kibera, as potential role-models for other children.
There are many organizations promoting wide-scale aid throughout Africa, and although there is no question that their efforts are needed, we believe that the most effective way to create a self sustaining long term change is by focusing on rebuilding the foundation of the community through the children themselves. Our goal is to accomplish this through grass-roots efforts on a small scale. We aim to create the desired results and then continue to expand from within that nucleus. This may take several generations to complete, and it may not have the high profile effect of wide-scale aid, but we believe that over time health and education of children can improve the well-being of communities. We also aim to provide activities and programs for children and youth that support a commitment to their education, a strong sense of self-worth and a dedication to their community.
Our Goal: A Multi-Purpose Community Building
Our goal over the next several months is to raise enough money to make a life long impact on the children of Kibera. We are currently in the process of looking for land just outside of Kibera to build a multi-purpose facility that can provide the following:
A quality built orphanage that won’t leak when it rains and won’t turn the earth floor to mud.
An expanded orphanage, separate from the rest of the building and able to accommodate a growing orphan population
A separate and well equipped school to supplement the expanding need for education
An expanded feeding facility with kitchen and adequate foodservices.
A community centre for after school children; including a library, computers and mentoring projects
